Conservation of wetlands in Kenya under investigation

Dr. William Taylor and PhD student Sunita Sakar are working with Dr. David Western, Director of the African Conservation Centre in Nairobi, on a project investigating all the major wetlands of the archipelago at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. The first aspect of this research project is studying the changes of the wetlands in terms of vegetation, animal use and extent. They are also documenting the effects of elephants and different grazing intensities on wetland vegetation structure. The results of this research will provide essential information to the people who use the wetlands and for policy-making and managerial decisions taken outside and within the park.
